Latest from the Ringing Master (updated Wednesday 3rd March 2010)
Like most areas in the country our ringing activities for the last few days of 2009 and nearly all of January 2010 were severely hampered by the poor weather conditions, consequently there was not a lot going on after the carol service at Tong.
A peal was rung at Armitage Bridge to celebrate Mary Dixons' 80th birthday, followed by a peal the following week at Guisesley of Yorkshire Major on the branch meeting day. This was a new concept (as the January meetings have been poorly attended) aimed at ringers who may want to ring a peal for the first time or perhaps ring something they wanted to try. Sadly no-one came forward. The feeling is to have another go next January. Bells are already booked and it would be good to see a few new fdaces having a go.
The first big event of this calendar year is the training day on the 20th of March. We have had a number of applications and it looks like it is going to be very well attended. What we need now are some willing hands to act as helpers. No doubt the team leaders will be contacting folk very shortly to make up their groups.
This Saturday 20th February, is the monthly meeting at Armitage Bridge. The hope is that we will concentrate the ringing on basic stuff to encourage those ringers on the training day to make an early start with some good quality rope time at their chosen catergory. So please come along between 2:00 and 4:00pm Everyone will be more than welcome.
The monthly Bradford practice has been moved to the 2nd Monday in the month in an effort to miss the bank holidays. The attendance has been very good over the last 12 months and consequently progress has been made at all levels from rounds and call changes right through to surprise maximus. But there is still room for more folk should the fancy take you. To compliment Bradford there is a 10 bell practice at Marsden on the 3rd Monday and a 12 bell surprise practice at Halifax on the 1st Tuesday. Those interested in perhaps moving on a little quicker can attempt Cambridge, Yorkshire and Bristol plus Grandsire and Stedman Cinques. I think thats a very comprehensive programme for those wanting to ring on 10 and 12 bells.
There is a 10 bell striking competition at Knottingley in October, we will require 30 ringers to fully participate in this event. We require a band each for rounds/call changes, Plain Bob Royal and Yorkshire Royal. More details to follow as we get get them.
With a branch outing planned to Lincolnshire on the 17th of April, our striking competion and barbeque on the 15th of May and our big outing to Scotland on the weekend of 13th of August there really should be something this year to interest everyone.
